Well hey there sailor!

holy! May you say? I guess that is a pretty long time.

well, what can I say?

~The water in Vancouver is Turbid. That means its brown and needs a good boiling before you can drink it. Getting kinda used to it, drinking more fruit juice.
~School is going OK, it has been grossly neglected the past few days, that changes tomorrow.
~I am going to Glasgow in January.
~My neighbours in Vancouver don't care about dandelions but ARE named Bochon.
~I am feeling extremely well loved as I have a huge number of awesome friends and an incredible family.
~I work in a candy store which is awesome, even if my boss it a dink.
~I have the best roommate ever!
~I am drawing a comic about a terrarium in outer space.

Holy smokes!!

Sherwood park is frickin’ scary!!

We were just sitting at home, enjoying the May long weekend, when our doorbell rings. Its out new neighbor. . .well, actually,it's the sister of our new neighbor. . .who doesn’t even live near us. She has decided that it is her responsibility to give my mom a little lecture about lawn care and dandelions. I was in the washroom, so I missed the first part of the conversation, but the part I caught was her saying thing like,

“ I am not trying to be the grouchy neighbor, its just that some people make the effort. . .and some people don’t”

And, of course, she was all politeness.

HOLY CRAP!!
Christ, Edmonton has only been green for two weeks!! Both of my parents work full time and volunteer their free hours profusely, not to mention their own hobbies. . .maybe their lives are full and rich and they have more pressing matters on their minds than a perfectly weed free lawn. Maybe they realize that there are more important things in life!!!

My mom and I just spent the past half hour trying to come up with clever ways to retaliate, my favorite was to go over to their lawn (after they have meticulously pulled out each yellow weed) with all the white fluffy dandelions we can find and give them a fresh crop!!

my mom wants to show up on their doorstep with a welcome basket and a bouquet of fresh yellow dandelions.

We will probably just ignore it and let it go. We are big people like that.

Wow, I have been neglecting this sucker big time!

If there is anyone out there who reads this baby and not my other blog, you should check it out! I have been updating daily with drawings . It’s a challenge to myself to draw everyday for the entire summer, to make me better. . .at drawing. . .yes!

http://heathertoes.livejournal.com/

If you care, no worries if you don’t :)

So life has been pretty good so far this summer! I have yet to find a good job, but I have been working part time mowing lawns and doing yard work with a friend. I am getting lots of sunshine and lots of tan!! Woo-hoo! Brown town!!
We have started work on out play which will be appearing in the Vancouver fringe next fall! I think it will be a good one, 20 min of crazy movement, sketch comedy, and joy! Oh, so much joy!! This is something completely different for yours truly, I haven’t been on stage since jr.high, and even then I always had the smallest parts possible. I am feeling fairly confidant about it, it’s a good team of folks at any rate! I am also doing props and costumes which I am extremely excited about!

One acts tonight and laser tag tomorrow!!

Yippee!!

My Goodness, I dislike packing.

In fact I am extraordinarily good at avoiding it. I cannot believe that we are to leave in less than a fortnight, eleven days indeed, just four until we need to be out of our home. We will be staying at Kailey and Kim’s, they are awfully good to have us, just five girls and a cat. It should be a good week with absolutely no commitments and nothing to do but lay on the beach in the sun.

there are fabulous tulips on the kitchen table, they bring m immense Joy!

It feels like a billion years since my last update, a billion years since reading week. Starting from that week off time has been speeding by like a rocket ship! Pazow!

the biggest news since last update. . . I am going on exchange!!!! I will find out more at a meeting on Thursday but all I know now is that I have been accepted by the school and will be going somewhere, my first choice is Edinburgh but I could be going anywhere! Crazy adventure time.

other news, another successful comic convention for the Radar Friends and by successful I mean that we broke even!! (YESS!). For this convention the Radar Friends were being profiled for a television show called ‘969' on a digital cable station called razer (misspelled on purpose, because they’re so edgy!. . .their slogan is ‘why experience life when you can watch it on TV. . .yes indeed! ). it was part cool, part funny, part ridiculous. The guys from the station were really nice but very much TV people, they kept trying to make us more extreem!!!! . . .it was fun though!

if anyone is looking for some new mini comics to read, we have a new one!! It’s called ‘blue’ and it is very pretty with a vellum cover and everything. 4, 5 or 6 bucks!!

there is probably more to say but I think I had better work on my essay for science class (arg). Its about the sense of hearing, weee- heeee!!

talk to you soon, leepshkins!

Reading week! Three cheers for a week off school!

I am sitting at school resolutely not doing work. It’s hard to bring my self to do any thing when I still have ONE WHOLE DAY to get stuff accomplished, but that is just the girl I am ;) I have managed to get a few things done, my video project is in good shape, I helped Rose move this morning, showed a group of crazy Alberta-trons a Vancouver good time, lots of socializing and adventures. I was thinking today about how many friends I have made this week! I got to know Errol and Garrick much better and met their friend Sarah for the first time (she is very nice), finally spent time with the Kim, Kailey, Mark team and got to see Kim and Mark fight and be ever so cute, even spending time with Rose and Emiliano- people I have known for a long time but never really hung out with – was really cool! Not to mention * cough *live journal friends * ahem *! Yes indeedy! Rose’s new place is really cute, it is tiny but inexpensive and in a really great neighborhood, we were only there for about an hour unloading and three different neighbors came over to introduce themselves! Isn’t that great. I have never really lived in a place where you know your neighbors (save Boch and Rose), I think the house I was born in was like that, but I hardly remember. Rose is responsible for the rent at the dolphin for another month (which is ridiculous) so she is going to use the space as a gallery!!! Our building manager is super excited about it and is going to forget to mention it to the building owners (hahaha)! There will be two shows over the course of the month and two openings! Should be a crazy good time!!

well, I am probably forgetting something but I think I will head home and avoid doing work there. Hopefully I will get to watch a movie with J-BO, if she’ll have me! And then to bed to fight this cold that is definitely coming.

until next time dear friends

There were just two huge black squirrels on our balcony. . . just hanging out. The came right up to the door and looked in side. I got all the way up to the glass and looked them squar in the eye without them getting scared. They were beautiful and freaky, completely black with glossy black eyes. Strange. . . we were scared that they were plotting a way to get inside and reek havoc. I think one of them had an injured arm, he was holding it really close to his body and not really using it, poor guy.

It was a bright sunny day today, I feel I wasted a lot of it lying in my bed. . . well, not really wasted, I like my bed. We did go grocery shopping though, and now we are going to Boch’s for a pot luck and scrabble!

Until next time

Back in van-tron!!

02:45 p.m.
So its back to school! The first week of classes is now complete, save one (science. . . at art school. . . pretty strange). They all seem really good.

1) wheel throwing - the teacher for this class seems really mean, but very competent, I think I will learn a lot 2) video essentials - this teacher seems really nice and also competent, she reminds me of aunt Nancy! 3)sculpture in social space- this class is being taught by the schools current artist in residence. He seems pretty good. His current project is called “safety gear for small animals” ( http://www.safetygearmuseum.com/ ) which is awesome and funny! He says that he is currently the worlds largest producer of safety gear for small animals and that if each piece of safety gear for a small animal that he has produced were one micron by one micron and placed end to end, they would stretch around the world two and a half times! 4) non-western art- I wasn’t to excited about this class a first but after the first lecture, I really am!! 5)metal fabrication- this one will be a lot of fun I think, welding and such. The teacher is the artist who did the big pendulum in the HSBC bank, downtown Vancouver ( http://www.year01.com/issue11/storey.html ). He has excellent hair. 6) science- the truth about this class is yet to be told. Kim is in it though, so it bound to be good!!

Yes yes! It should be a good semester!

today it is raining a lot, I went on a big errand run in the rain. It was a nice walk, I got a lot accomplished. I was wearing an excellent sweater!

Tonight it is Christmas at Boch’s (Ukrainian Christmas)! She is making a big Ukrainian meal for us and some friends. Yum yum yum!

07:49 p.m.
I am giving myself a break from my stinky art history paper (as Kim’s mom would say) since I have hit the halfway point. This isn’t saying much as I have been working on it for about six and a half hours straight. ARRRRRG. I am so close to being done everything for this semester so I guess I shouldn’t complain, but I wish paper writing came easer for me. It doesn’t help that I have had three very large and very strong cups of very strong tea and now my eyeballs are all jittery and my tummy hurts. Shoot. I plan to stay as late as I need to and then sleep in I don’t need to be at school until 10:00 tomorrow to meet Dam*an M*ppet for my end of term sculpture review. After that it is the foundation performance show thingy which will be a lot of fun to watch without having to participate.

Ok, I should get back to work. Sorry for pouting!

cheers

It has been completely foggy here for quite a few days now, I think it is starting to clear. The fog makes me feel like a mariner, it makes me want to stand on a rock at the beach, stare off towards the ocean and contemplate life. Yesterday evening I was walking home form school with Jordyn and it was my favourite wether combination ever. It was raining and cloudy directly above us but on the horizon, where the sun was, it was clear blue skies. Therefore it was sunny and raining at the same time! I just love it. All the colours were really intense as well, the grass was so green, the sky was so blue and everything in-between. We walked and marvelled and discussed nanaimo bars, we determined that nanaimo bars are good.

this weekend is SASS (student art show and sale), I didn’t sleep Wednesday night to get stuff finished for it nor did Kim or Jordyn and Colleen was up very very late, what a bunch of crazy kids we are, I hope we all make a million bucks! Kim and I went for breakfast early Thursday morning to the omelettery, the server is starting to remember us as we go there so often, it’s a good place!

I guess that is all I have to say for now, I am off to clean my room, laundry and then eassy writing! Wish me luck! ~Heather

The last few days have been super sunny and warm. It has been really nice, I have been walking the long was everywhere in order to stalk up on vitamin D (that’s the one you get from the sun right?). This is something you need to do when you live in Vancouver. Today I ended up carrying my parka most of the way. It is really great in the rainy cold, but when the sun comes out it seems a bit ridiculous . . . wearing a wool, fur trimmed, full length winter coat when there is green grass and flowers. When I wear it here people always say “wow, you must be from somewhere cold” and then nod knowingly when I say Edmonton. I laugh at this because I could really say any Canadian city that is not on the west coast and get the same response. Everywhere is really cold compared to here!! Silly Vancouvertrons!

On Saturday I went with Kim to the Vancouver story-telling festival to see a story-teller named Mike Burns. He was this old Irish guy who told traditional Irish stories, complete with the occasional Irish-Gaelic word thrown in. Stories within stories about lakes within lakes, fan-fecking-tastic!!

Other good things:
~Mom packages with o-so-much candy!
~Candy
~Organic Bananas
~Harry Potter (very soon!)
~Good Friends

Bad things
~Fruit Flies

I love the kind of party where the people who are not in costume are the ones who look like fools.

I am not even sure if I have mentioned it here, but the ECPC (Emily Carr Party Committee) (mostly Kim, John Wertscheck, Colleen, Jordyn, a few pod mates, and myself) put together a huge Halloween party at the school last night. Man oh man, ECPC makes good parties, even if the ECPC can’t really enjoy and that the stress of putting them together is almost unbearable.

Kim is such a superstar! She ran the bar like a pro last night despite the hassles of kegs over cans, beer in hair, and servers with authority issues! And her costume was really great!!! Man is she ever great! My conjoined twin . . . man!

Another one who is a superstar, Colleen T. MacIsaac! She worked really hard and put together some really, really great prizes for the costume contest, found us a sound guy, ran an awesome candy booth, read salad poetry, did just about everything really! She is so great. I wish that I lived with her. . . oh wait. . .

There are a lot of people who where a huge help and only a few who were not. Which is just the way I like it. The ones who were not were mostly just a pain in the neck and not really a force against us. Compared to Valentine’s day, the evening went very smoothly. There was no unauthorized fire dancing behind the school, no drunken idiots setting of a fire extinguisher up stairs (those two events were unrelated, strangely) and no band/audience members threatening to riot. I think the worst thing on my end was trying to get the costume contest organized over Daniel Oates’ stupid DJ (they were having an opening for their show at the same time. . . we blew them out of the water), and the fact that the first band was the worst thing I have ever heard, ever! The last band was really great. I didn’t get to listen very much but, they had the whole audience up dancing and ended on time, even though it meant they played a shorter set. What a good group of Alberta guys. And three of them thanked me for organizing it, even though I had only dealt with one of them. Just great.

After the clean up, the Radar friends went to the Namm to relax and have some fun for ourselves. We were all so exhausted, it was quite funny. We ran into a bunch of Emily Carr students who had been at the cabaret, but I guess there is not much choice for good food after twelve o’clock, there is Denny's, but that is not good food, gross!

Hello my ninja friends

10:34 a.m.
It’s been good these past days!

Last night I went to Colleen and Jordyn’s Interdisciplinary Forums lecture, mostly to see what the fuss was all about. It’s this class they have that has been adapted for this semester to give feed back to writers who have written essays on Vancouver’s art scene for an anthology that is coming out next year. The writers speak and the students are supposed to give them feed back. The weird part is that they have opened the lectures to the public, so it’s kind of become a place for Vancouver’s elite art crowd to gather and talk about themselves. The students are all really frustrated, and understandable so. I know it doesn’t make me to excited about possibly ‘breaking into the scene’ one day, yuck!

The other weird thing is art stars. Allie sat beside Jeff Wall last night. That might not mean a lot to none art school folk (I know it wouldn’t have meant a thing to me before I went to art school) but his is probably the most well known Canadian Artist in the world right now, or possibly ever. He is just about the only name we ever hear in any class. The pop music equivalent would be someone like Celin Dion. . . which is a sick example, but the only one I can think of. . .

after the lecture, I went to try to make a mold of my teeth in dental rubber. It was very comical, I am glad I was alone is the studio, I would have been a very strange sight to walk in on. I think I got the top teeth alright but the bottoms need another go.

my crit for my project that I was worried about last week went really, really well. It made the class laugh a lot (which is something for a class of sullen sculpture students) and I think the teacher really liked it, which is what counts when it comes down to marks!

We had another awesome progressive dinner party on Tuesday, and the four of us have started a lottery pool! By Monday we should all be about 7.5 million dollars richer. . . if all goes according to plan that is. . . but the guy at the gas station where we bought the ticket blessed it and gave us free donuts, so we’re pretty much set!

I spent all day in the wood shop today, I wrote a little poem about it:

Sawdust sawdust in my cloths
Sawdust sawdust up my nose
Sawdust sawdust in my hair
Sawdust sawdust in every where!

yes, the moral of the story is that lathes are fun! Also that I am infinitely less worried about my sculpture project that is due on Tuesday! Weeee!

We went to see Jason Webley perform last night (that seems to be a common statement in these posts) It was incredible as per usual! I want to make art like he makes music. The only down side was that there was this group of his fans that came up from Seattle, all dressed like pirates. Why was that a down side, you may ask. Well, they were all really drunk and stupid and really disrespectful, and kept talking and yelling out stupid comments when he was trying to sing, very irritating and distracting to those of us that were just trying to listen. Oh well, it was still an awesome show!

I have the hiccups right now and they are giving me a headache, shoot. ~Heather

Hey crew!

Kim cut my hair today!! It turned out really good! She is such a super-star. I got jealous of her snazzy new doo so she offered to cut mine for me. She is a dove.

We had a pub night planning meeting today, it should be a swell party indeed.

We googled the word krelbow today, apparently it is actual slang not just something my crazy brother made up (does my crazy brother read this?? He should comment if he does). We also decided that the word for the backside of one’s knee should be ‘nee’ only pronounce ‘ka-nee’. . . Yes.

Thanksgiving this weekend! We are having an afternoon lunch type meal at kailey and kim’s, pot luck of course. Kailey is even doing a small turkey, it is so crazy!! It’s sad not to be home for things like thanksgiving, Allie Tweedy is going home to Edmonton for the weekend and I am very jealous. I told her to say hi to the city for me and she said she would walk down whyte ave in my honour. That was very nice of her.

I am listening to Nick Drake, everyone should, it’s good stuff.

this has been a random post, I am sorry.

Until next time dear friends,

Love Heather

Yo ho! I guess it’s time for some updating!! So, what’s new? Last night colleen and I went to the fringe volunteer appreciation party, it was quite excellent. Colleen won a gift certificate for some free gonch from the door prize! There was pizza and a really funny cake that was two halves baked by two different people and iced in the back room of the brewery with store bought icing and said “05' FRINGE” on the top. Very amusing. Before hand we went to Kim and Kailey’s for dinner, Kim made these awesome curry pastry things which were sooooooo good! It was a little Vic alumni party as Kailey was not there and our friend Allison came, she graduated from Vic a year after us.

School is going well, my one sculpture class is still a bit weird, stuff like not knowing deadlines for projects, not really doing anything for the first three hours of class, meetings with the teacher about my project while he has a cigarette outside. . . during class time, just strange. I keep hoping it will get better, and I can’t bring myself to not like the guy, he just seems more artist than teacher. All my other classes are great, I really like mold making and am really starting to get into the swing of cultural theory. weee!

We had a super fun travelling dinner party with Rose and Jordyn on Monday. We started with appetizers and drinks, than moved down to Rose’s for and incredible main course and then back up to Boch’s for dessert! It was great, and a lot of fun. We plan to make it a monthly occurrence.

I think that is pretty much all that is new, it has started to rain and boy does it rainith. Time to break out the duck umbrella!

So long for now!
~Love from Heather

Hey there friends and lovers. So it’s been an exciting weekend of late night/early morning (4:30 am) comic making adventures at the twenty four hour copy place and then a very tired day of comic selling at the comic convention. It was a lot of fun especially once we got some caffeine in us. If any one who reads this would like to purchase one, it is five excellent comics by five lovely ladies for only five dollars . . . that’s like a buck a comic . . . Score! It is called “STRANGERS and the homes of strangers and comes to a total of a whopping 48 eight pages*. . . that’s like 9.6 cents per page. . . what a deal!!!

*EDIT* actually 0.104 cents per page. . . yeah!! Math!!

yes, anyway, I am pretty sure that most of the people who read this had a hand in the comic so this may be a bit redundant.

I have been feeling really productive today. I got some homework done, some thats not even due for another two days!!, finally finished unpacking, cleaned my room and wrote a bunch of post card to my Edmontrons, even got a little nap. Yes!

colleen is awesome, she made a wonderful spinach lasagna for dinner tonight. She is just so great!!

winning!
